One of emo music’s most successful and memorable bands, Hawthorne Heights, put together one of the most nostalgic shows of the year. Bringing together bands This Wild Life, Emery, Stick to Your Guns, Armor for Sleep, Cartel, I See Stars, Anberlin, Saosin, Thursday and themselves, for an exciting tour dedicated to longtime emo fans.
Although the tour hit major cities along the way, only select bands played each show. For the NYC date which we attended, Emery, Stick to Your Guns, Cartel, Anberlin, and Hawthorne Heights were on the bill. We arrived in time for Stick to Your Guns, who were surprisingly heavy in comparison to the rest of the night. Cartel came on after, playing many songs off of “Chroma,” a beloved album for OG fans of the band. Anberlin would come on after, though clearly with another singer. Matty Mullins (Memphis May Fire) would be fronting the band while original singer Stephen Christian is taking some personal time off. The band would play some of their most popular tracks, particularly off of “Cities.”
The favorite band of the night was definitely Hawthorne Heights who had not only the most heartfelt set but also the best stage lighting for the night. The Ohio natives would talk about the hard times they’ve had on their way to getting signed and finally breaking through to the mainstream, what is now 20 years ago. The band played “The Silence in Black and White” from start to finish to fans who have spent the last 20 years with these tracks. The band’s show was special and was appreciated by the attendees who were filled with nostalgia throughout the night.
