Sepultura announced their farewell tour earlier this year, marking the end of a history. So much is known about the band due to Max and Igor Cavalera’s involvement in the band, yet the band has continued with an iconic trajectory since the brother’s leave. This review is dedicated to the history of Sepultura post Max and Igor.
After Max’s exit from Sepultura, Derrick Green stepped up to front the band and faced a lot of challenges in doing so. One of them being the immediate blacklisting of the band due to the original vocalist no longer being present. Yet, Green successfully fronted the band for nearly 30 years.
Along with Green is Andreas Kisser, who has been on every album since the band’s second release, “Schizophrenia.” Bassist Paulo Jr. has been the longest member of the band even though he was not featured until “Chaos A.D.” Together, the three members continued the legacy of Sepultura through 12 full-length albums. Although the reasons for them calling it quits is unknown, the band ended their announcement with, “Euthanasia, the right to a dignified death. The right to choose to live free and to choose when you die!”
The band lived through their timespan on their own terms, and decided to end it the same way. It is hoped that the band members will continue through other projects going forward, as their talent is undeniable.
Helping Sepultura say goodbye was legendary death metal band Obituary, who through their songs, helped warm up the crowd. As a personal big fan of the band, it was incredible to see John Tardy up close and hear him perform live.
Sepultura came out to a huge turnout, the general admission floor was crowded to the point of not being able to move. The band deserved nothing less on their final show. The band’s setlist took fans through the best of what the band has offered, an hour and a half set which included songs like “Attitude,” “Kairos,” “Agony of Defeat,” and “Roots.” Although some of the songs were not originally recorded with Green, he has made each song his own, and given the band new life.
The venue was packed and it was clear that selling out venues is not the reason for their end. Regardless of the reason, it was obvious through the fans who showed up and cheered on the band that their legacy will continue past their end.
